Miedzymorze Flags

Flags I made based on an idea on AH.com for the Międzymorze, the suggested merger of most of Eastern Europe after WW1 ([link]). The actual idea itself never got close to taking off, but it's still an interesting footnote in history.

The main flag (top) is the national flag of the Intermarum Federation. The basic design is white and red, the flag of Poland and Bohemia. Separating the two are stripes of blue, green and blue - that both symbolise other nationalities in the Federation and the literal translation of it's name. The shield has the double cross on it, now used as a symbol of Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary and Belarus and as such represents the coming together of the various minorities in the Federation. Historically it was also associated with the Jagiellon dynasty ([link]) which ruled much of Eastern Europe, an appropriate symbol for the Federation.

The lower three flags show the progression of the national flag after the Radical Nationalist Party* came to power, their party symbol being the Arrow Cross**.

At first the party used a version of the national flag with their symbol in the top left hand corner, this was not unusual as many organisations did the same.

After some time in power the party adopted a new flag, this being the second one, by replacing the double cross with the arrow cross. This grew in popularity as the party flag but it was not until a few years later that they made it the official national flag, removing the old double cross permanently.

Finally after suppressing some Polish rebellions the party completely scrapped the old design and instead created the lower flag, merging the colours into equal bands to remove any sense of superiority of some nationalities over others. They also included the arrow cross in the very centre, making it clear that they were in control.

After the War the Intermarum Federation (renamed the Intermarum Empire during it) was dissolved and the flag was never used again, but the Arrow Cross remains banned in many of the former countries that were part of it.


*Generic Fascist party name No. 48 (i.e. I couldn't be bothered to come up with a proper name).
**As I said, these are my versions of flags made by other people on AH.com. I didn't decide to use the Arrow Cross.

Oh, and I'm aware I broke the rules but I tried with white stripes and it didn't look that good. Flags are sort of exempt anyway...
