One of the first "good" maps I made, of an alternate Europe. It's based on a much simpler MS Paint map that I was playing around with, and I decided to do it up nicely. So there isn't a real story behind it, I just wanted a map to try and look professional.
The PoD must have been an alternate WW1.
The big winners are Austria and Hungary, who gained a lot more from A-H falling apart, Greece, who reclaimed Constantinople from the Turks, Portugal who got Galicia from Spain, and especially France, who gained Wallonia, Luxembourg, parts of the Rhineland, Western Switzerland and a large chunk of Italy (!).
Obviously on the loosing team are Spain, loosing land to Portugal, Morocco and the UK, Italy, who lost a lot of land to France and saw a breakaway state in the North (a federal republic between Lombardy and Venetia, hence the twin capitals), Germany, who lost Bavaria and the east to a Communist rebellion, and Russia, who lost a vast amount of it's eastern and southern territories.
Once again I couldn't resist making some flags to go with the map. Most of them should be pretty self-explanatory, Finland is based on its coat of arms, France has turned into a more authoritarian state with the Fleur-de-lis as its symbol, both France and Germany replaced the red from their flags due to its association with Communism, shown in the flag of the Prussian Union. The Balearic Islands are a colony of the UK in this timeline, they get a colonial flag to match Malta and Cyprus. Finally Jugoslavia (an alternate transliteration of Jugoslavija, Yugoslavia in OTL) is this timeline is more inclusive, its coat of arms includes the Serbs, Croatians, Slovenians and Bosnians and its capital is in Sarajevo rather than Belgrade.
I'm not quite sure if I like Austria's new flag. I understand it's logic; it's a tricolour version of the Hapsburg flag. Also, the red-white-red would've looked too much like Poland-Lithuania's. Still, given that Austria's RWR tricolour is older, I think that P-L should change theirs.
Also, I'm glad Bavaria's not communist. Communism would not have lasted there unless the Soviets were already in Paris.
Portugal - what can I say. Spain was on the loosing side but they didn't want to break it up too much in case they provoke some civil war. I do agree about the Austrian flag, oddly enough I'm using an inverted version for a flag of Flanders I'm currently making. Note though that a lot of countries (Germany, France, the Netherlands) have removed the red form their flag, I sort of envisioned this as a very odd anti-communist protest. Completely mad of course, but it's a nice idea. No, the German communists were focused in the east. Odd though considering Bavaria was declared an independent communist state for a time!
