CF: Southern German Federation by Martin23230 CF: Southern German Federation by Martin23230
This Factfile was based on the SGF flag I created a while before, I decided it needed a map to back it up.

The scenario is that Franz Ferdinand is not shot, so WW1 is avoided, and the United States of Greater Austria plan is put into place (explaining the borders of the Sudetenland). However the USGA still cannot hold together and so breaks apart after an alternate WW1 (Germany lost the casus belli of the assassination, and gradually came to see Austria was not going to provide another one what with being nicer to the minorities and all. Instead went ahead and found another way to start a war with the Entente, dragged Austria in and still lost).

Since in this scenario the Germans, specifically the Prussians, are seen much more as aggressors the southern states decided to leave the Empire and join with the newly independent Austria, creating the Southern German Federation.
The treaty that ended the war in 1919 confirmed this, and forbade the two Germanys from ever uniting (like Germany and Austria in OTL Versailles).

The 12 states of the SGF are, in order on the map;
Südrhein
Baden
Württemberg
Franken
Oberpfalz
Bayern
Tirol
Salzburg
Kärnten
Oberösterreich
Niederösterreich
Steiermark

Interestingly the Austrian state of Vorarlberg in this timeline managed to go through with its plan to join Switzerland, Liechtenstein also decides to give in now it was surrounded.

I think Vienna would be a more obvious choice for a capital, since it was much bigger than Munich back then, at least as far as I know. After WWI it even was to big for Austria, it got entitled "Austria's hydrocephalus".

Maybe it's because Munich was more central, while Vienna was on the extreme east of the map.

I don't think that that is something that realistically matters. Look at Germany or the US. Both their capitals are far in the east of the countries.

Berlin was right in the middle of the Kingdom of Prussia, and Washington, DC is located in the center of the former Thirteen Colonies.

Well yeah, but they didn't change it when their territory shrinked/grew.

Should they? Once firmly established, a capital shouldn't be ordinarily moved.

And that's why Vienna should be capital of the SGF. But that's only my opinion.

Hey cool idea and of course Munich must be the capital XD
But I wonder although, why not Wien/ Vienna?

And what about Elsass-Lothringen, it should reunite, too ;)

Munich is more central, but it was a real toss up between Munich and Vienna. Overall I wouldn't be surprised if some institutions remained in Vienna whilst others moved to Munich.

I considered A-L, but since in this timeline Germany lost WW1 even worse France would obviously take it. Who knows though, they might want to join later.

Yes great idea!

Hm maybe a vote for A-L would be good and that in this timeline the german A-L´s vote for Southgermany and only the French around Metz in A-L vote for France.

I remember seeing a map on that a while ago.

Ah, here it is: [link]

That may well fit in with the scenario here.

As someone said later on in that thread, the borders were probably gerrymandered to ensure Germany didn't lose that much. So I suppose that would probably be realistic.

Fair enough, I thought it might not.
Basically it is possible to fix electoral boundaries to favour one side or the other.
This should help: [link]

Oh, I remember that flag from the flag thread on AH.com, nice.

As you mentioned yourself, the concept isn't exactly novel, but the map goes nicely with the flag, and this is also one of the more realistic attempts at something like this I have seen before.

Thanks. I did want to make it as realistic as possible as like you say the concept it a common one. Most timelines have the SGF forming to counter the NGC so the united Germany is never formed, but that would require getting rid of the rest of Austria-Hungary in some way. Having them splitting after loosing WW1 makes more sense to me.

Not hugely, the idea of a South German Federation to counter the real-life North German (Con)federation is a common one. Overall however I'm glad how this one turned out, so thanks!
